Numerous methods exist for hardware, and I was particularly thrilled about the prospects of the neutral atom strategy. This enthusiasm led to our investment in Thompson’s enterprise, Logiqal.
What if your predictions come true?
As a venture capital investor, we welcome convexity—putting funds into ventures that carry a high failure rate but offer the chance of a 500x return if they succeed.
If quantum computers realize their potential, they could revolutionize diverse sectors. They could reshape material sciences, pharmaceutical breakthroughs, logistics, and financial markets in ways we’ve never seen before.
Quantum computing might facilitate pharmaceutical innovations that extend human life by 20 to 30 years and spur advancements in material sciences, potentially even helping us reach Mars.
Your discussion about quantum computing resembles the dialogue many AI advocates have regarding artificial general intelligence.
Quantum technology currently mirrors where AI stood in 2015, moving from research-oriented projects to tangible applications.
You noted that faking expertise in quantum is challenging. I would argue that faking expertise in AI is less difficult. How do you determine whom to support?
Numerous AI startups are emerging, but only a few will cultivate a lasting competitive edge beyond branding or speed, which are inadequate for establishing a durable company.
For instance, BrightAI applies stickers to infrastructure for long-term monitoring, establishing a strong competitive edge. Those stickers are not easily removed.
The value of most AI comes from established corporations. My cofounder Penny serves on Microsoft’s board. Firms like Microsoft and Google, with their extensive user bases, can introduce mediocre products yet still wield power in pricing and distribution. In such a landscape, don’t be an ant when the elephants are in motion.
How do you incorporate AI into your work?
For everything. There is nothing I don’t turn to AI for. Today, I’ve likely engaged with it 25 times.
It has taken Google’s place for you?
Absolutely, for everything. From in-depth research to information gathering. Today, I even investigated which jobs are declining the quickest worldwide. I utilize it dozens of times daily.
