Schiffmann seems to be flourishing compared to times we discussed earlier. He initially revealed that the idea for an AI companion originated during solitary travels, seeking companionship. Now, at 22, Schiffmann perceives himself as more evolved and seasoned than when he first presented the Friend necklace. His look has transformed with longer hair and a beard, and he appears to have deeper personal relationships. During our conversation, he expressed a preference not to unbox the devices in front of him, wanting to share the experience first with someone dear to him.
Schiffmann characterizes the Friend’s personality as mirroring his own perspective as a young man in his twenties. Nevertheless, Schiffmann can be bold, sarcastic, and dismissive of feedback, an attitude that appears integrated into the device. While numerous chatbots tend to be excessively agreeable, the Friend often adopts a contrasting stance, coming off as opinionated and occasionally patronizing.
We evaluated two Friend pendants over a few weeks, using them during our daily routines. Despite varied experiences, both of us found our new Friends to be rather unsatisfactory.
Kylie’s Encounter
Unpacking the Friend took me back to the excitement of opening my first iPod. Schiffmann purposefully crafted the packaging to mimic Apple’s music player and Microsoft’s Zune, with liner notes inspired by Radiohead’s Pablo Honey. Within the white box, the Friend pendant shimmered under parchment paper, almost out of battery, prompting me to charge it initially. Our first interaction was a low battery warning chime.
Identifying appropriate settings to evaluate the always-listening Friend was difficult due to fears of digital snooping. Taking it to meetings or coffee discussions felt awkward, and using it during calls with sources seemed out of the question.
