Grammarly, previously known for its spellchecking capabilities, has jumped into the AI trend by unveiling a new set of AI tools for students, including an “AI grader agent” that provides personalized feedback on assignments and predicts potential grades by accessing publicly available instructor information. Despite the unclear details on how this is done, Grammarly suggests that students can input their instructor’s details and the course rubric, which the AI uses to tailor its feedback. The predicted grade could be surprising — for instance, a 78/100 — stirring concerns about privacy and the ethics of gathering teacher information. Grammarly also offers AI tools for educators, including an AI Detector and a Plagiarism Checker, aimed at identifying AI-generated content and accidental plagiarism. These tools are positioned as aids for students, ostensibly to help them avoid accidental similarities in their work. Furthermore, Grammarly introduces an “AI Humanizer” tool to help AI-assisted writing appear more natural. This move aligns with the educational trend toward AI integration, prepping students for an AI-driven academic and professional environment. Jenny Maxwell, head of Grammarly for Education, emphasizes the need for AI that supports learning, asserting that the new agents fulfill this role. The AI tools will be available on Grammarly’s new AI-native writing platform for Free and Pro users, just in time for the new semester.
