What Precisely Does Palantir Engage In?

In response to WIRED’s comprehensive request for input, Palantir representative Lisa Gordon expressed the company’s “pride in supporting the US government, particularly its warfighters,” underscoring its unwavering dedication to its founding mission “to back the West and empower the world’s key institutions.” Gordon highlighted that the open letter that criticized Palantir was endorsed by only a small segment of the firm’s approximately 8,000 employees and alumni.

Onset of Big Data

Palantir provides tools for businesses, nonprofits, and governmental bodies to navigate through data. What distinguishes Palantir is the breadth and depth of its offerings. The company markets its system as a substitute for various dashboards and applications, as noted in a 2022 review by blogger and data engineer Ben Rogojan.

Palantir’s software overlays a client’s pre-existing systems, facilitating data integration and analysis without modifying the foundational architecture. This method is notably appealing to government agencies employing a combination of contemporary and obsolete software.

Palantir gained traction during the 2010s, a period characterized by the emergence of “Big Data.” Many startups surfaced, utilizing data accessible via smartphones and internet-connected devices. The enthusiasm surrounding Big Data compelled businesses, particularly those with outdated systems, to enhance their software or face becoming outdated.

Updating legacy systems can be expensive and complicated. Rather than completely revamping everything, companies may opt for a solution that works seamlessly with their current infrastructure, which is where Palantir shines.

Palantir’s software is designed for nontechnical users, enabling them to derive insights without the need for coding. Users simply log into Foundry for commercial applications, or Gotham for law enforcement and governmental purposes.

The Marketing Approach

Foundry aids businesses in managing inventory, overseeing production, and tracking orders. Gotham functions as a tool for investigation for police and governmental clients, connecting individuals, locations, and significant events. Apollo oversees software updates for both Foundry and Gotham, while the Artificial Intelligence Platform provides AI tools for integration into these systems.

Both Foundry and Gotham process data and present user-friendly platforms. The main distinction is the type of data they process. Gotham handles data sourced from governmental or law enforcement origins, such as crime reports or subpoenaed social media data, extracting pertinent information. Clients are required to supply their own data; Palantir does not provide any.
